Xu received his B.S. from Nanjing University, where he spent two years working with Professor Yang Yu on superconductor-based quantum device, specifically coupled Josephson junctions. In 2011, he moved to the United States to pursue his Ph. D. in chemical physics. Under the supervision of Professor Mathias Weber at JILA, University of Colorado at Boulder. He studied the electronic transitions of organo-metallic compound ions by applying photodissociation spectroscopy to gas phase ions. His experimetal results contributed to the understanding the fundamental mechanisms of of photocatalysis and have been published in high-impact journals of American Chemistry Society and Royal Society of Science.
